William Johnson was the youngest of eleven children of David and Jane Lytle Johnson of Schenectady, New York. William joined his siblings in Lawrenceburg, IN where he met his wife, Margaret E. Shook, daughter of Senator Hezekiah Shook. The married March 31, 1842 in Versailles and raised their family in Johnson Twp, Ripley, Indiana.
