Wilhelm E. Koenig age 89 of Underwood, passed away on July 6, 2021 at his home. Bill was born in Bentley, Iowa on April 4, 1932 to Wilhelm and Mildred Timm Koenig. He grew up on the family farm and graduated with the Underwood class of 1950.
He served in the United States Army and the Korean War from 1950 – 1953. Upon returning home, he did farm work and worked at Adler's Bakery in Omaha. He married Shirley Jean Justen on October 26, 1957 in Treynor, Iowa. They were the parents of Danny and Tami. Bill worked for many years for Wonder Bread Bakery in Omaha. In 1990 he retired from Nebraska Machinery in Omaha. After retirement he worked in maintenance at Iowa Western Community College for twenty years. Bill also served eight years as the Mayor of Underwood.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of sixty-three years Shirley.
He is survived by his son Danny (Annette) Koenig, daughter, Tami (Bob) Caughey, all of Underwood. Grandsons, Cody (Kim) Koenig, Omaha, NE, Cory (Katie) Koenig, Charlotte, NC, Taylor (Samantha) Caughey, Underwood, Ryan Caughey, Underwood. Great grandchildren, Wilhelm (Will), Stevie, and Crew Koenig. Sister Virginia Walsh, Chicago, IL. Brothers, George Koenig, Omaha, NE, Stan (Joyce) Koenig, Council Bluffs, John Koenig, Council Bluffs, many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral to follow on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home. Interment will be in Fisher Cemetery in Underwood with full military rites. Memorials suggested to Underwood Volunteer Fire Dept., Underwood Lutheran Church or American Legion Post #2.
