FAYETTEVILLE — Mrs. Ruth Howard Jones, 96, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at her residence. She was born in Iredell County, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lester Howard Sr.
She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters: Kenneth Howard, Celeste Howard Drake, Joseph Dent Howard, Naomi Howard Whitton, Carl Lester Howard Jr. and Elisabeth Carter; also by her husband, 1st Lt. Guy Jones, who was killed in action in Europe in World War II.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Doris Howard. Ruth's nieces and nephews are Tiffany Howard of Appomattox, Va., Anne Howard Brozik of Waxhaw, Mary Drake Eberhardt of Raleigh, Bill Howard of Orlando, Fla., Jim Howard of Wake Forest, Joe Howard and Steve Howard of Fayetteville, Robert H, Carter of Albany, Ga., John Carter of Tignall, Ga., Patricia Anne Haney of Mansfield, Ohio, Glenda Yvonne Price of Sylvester, Ga, Charles David Carter of Suwanee, Ga., Earle Whitton of Midland, and Jane Nole of Auburn, Calif.
Ruth graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. degree. She taught world history for eight years at Fayetteville High School. These were the years before the drug problems and classes in religion were electives. She referred to this time as the "joy of her teaching profession."
She earned a master's degree in school counseling at Columbia University in New York and was a counselor at Eastway Junior High School in Charlotte for 15 years followed by the same at Irvin High at Fort Bragg.
Ruth was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities at Appalachian. While teaching at Fayetteville High School and counseling in Charlotte, she was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
While at FHS, she was president of the teaching organizations, NCEA and NEA, and was faculty adviser for Girl Scouts and Tri-Hi-Y. During the last two years at FHS, she was appointed counselor for two periods. Ruth organized both Career Day and the College Day programs for students. For several years, she prepared the awards program for graduation. In the eighth year, Ruth was chairperson for the Miss Fayetteville High School pageant and co-chairperson for the Junior-Senior Banquet.

As a member of Haymount United Methodist Church, she served on the administrative board and was secretary of the Barrington Bible Class. When she was a member of Hay Street United Methodist Church, Ruth was a member of the church's board of stewards and a teacher of the senior high school girls' Sunday school class.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service and Crematory. Funeral services will be conducted at 11a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Haymount United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dennis Goodwin, officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303, or to a charity of one choice.
The family has entrusted the services to Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service and Crematory, 610 Ramsey St., Fayetteville.
