James may have been buried on his farm. His probate records a payment of $9 for a coffin, but no reference to a memorial stone or burial. Grandview has the oldest burials in the area, another option is the old Western Methodist Cemetery on Cherry Street. It was abandoned, and condemned. Graves with stones were moved to Grandview, others were buried in a mass grave. The broken stones were sold for scrap, so locals occasionally find pieces or whole stones.

James was the son of James and Sarah Crawford. He married Margaret Wilson about 1753 and had five sons and five daughters. In 1763, he joined the Quakers. James was always pushing the limits, getting disowned several times through the years.
About 1776, James and his brother Josiah were among the first speculators and settlers in the Luzerne, Fayette Pennsylvania territory, where they established a ferry across the Monongahela River. James was a savvy businessman acquiring much land, that he passed on to his children.
James married second Elizabeth MNU before Aug 1785, and they had one daughter Margaret "Peggy". In 1796, they were among the early settlers on Indian Creek, along the west side of the Scioto, from Chillicothe to its mother head; in Ross county, Ohio.
