Asa Bowdish was born in Preston, Connecticut, the son of Abraham Bowdish and Hannah (Reynolds) Bowdish. He married Elizabeth Mulkins on April 15, 1779 in Preston.

The couple had 10 children including Sarah (1780-1780), Amey (1781-1782), John Reynolds (1784-1847), Lucy (1786-), Hannah (1789-), Asa (1791-1854), James (1794 -1839), William (1795-), Joseph (1796-) and Stephen (1797-1860).

Asa Bowdish served in the American Revolution. He was a private in Captain Munson's Company of the 8th Connecticut Regiment (NSSAR Ancestor #42727). According to a statement by his son John Reynolds Bowdish Sr, Asa saw service at the Battle of Monmouth.

After the Revolutionary War, Asa and Elizabeth eventually moved to New Lisbon, Otsego Co, NY where they lived the rest of their lives. While in New Lisbon, Asa gained the reputation of being a man the community used to solve disputes. Thus, he was even described as "Asa Bowdish Esq."

Asa's body is actually buried in the Gardnertown Cemetery (aka Bowdish or Kenyon Cemetery) outside of the town of Mt. Vision near the junction of State Routes 11 and 15 (as opposed to the larger cemetery outside of town also called Mt Vision at the corner of State Routes 11 & 11B). Between 1930 and 1950, Asa's headstone was moved to the Mt Vision Methodist Cemetery in town across State Highway 205 from the Mt Vision Methodist Church. Other Bowdish headstones were also moved from the Gardnertown Cemetery as the result of damage from tree root growth.
