Jean Ann was born in 1935 in Pierre shortly before the family moved to Rosebud, South Dakota. Jean graduated from high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado and from Aberdeen Normal School in Aberdeen, South Dakota. After graduation she taught school in Gregory, South Dakota and was married to Paul Henry Schwarting in 1957. Paul was an engineer with the Iowa State Highway Department. They lived in Ames, Cedar Rapids, Mason City and in 1978, Cedar Falls, Iowa. As of 1980 they were living in Sac City, Sac, Iowa. Jean and Paul had two daughters.
