Bio: Judge James Trotter was born in Augusta Co., VA near the town of Staunton, on the 4th of March, 1805.
His parents were James Trotter and Mary Beard. In 1806 the family emigrated to KY and settled in Cumberland Co. He came to MO in 1832 and settled in Carroll Co., which was then a part of Ray Co. In 1837, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Cary, the daughter of Nathaniel Cary, one of the earliest pioneers of Carroll Co. She died in 1846. His 2nd marriage was in 1847 to Mrs. Jane Beard, the daughter of Major James Fletcher. His children are seven in number, four by his first wife and three by his second wife. The oldest daughter, Nancy Jane, is the wife of George L. Winfrey. The others in the order of their births are Calvin W. Trotter, who married Mattie F. Gentry, Eliza A. Trotter, who married M. N. Pitts, and Cary B. Trotter. The children by his second wife are Mary Amanda, the wife of Isaac R. Brown, Martha, the wife of H. B. Scammel, and Fletcher.
In 1838 he was elected sheriff, which office he held for three terms; in 1852 he was elected judge of the county court, which office he held, with exception of one year, continuously up to 1879.
