5208 Private D Harper, C Company, 1st Battalion the Manchester Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Gibraltar and was in Natal by 7 Oct 1899. The battalion was moved up to Ladysmith, and was present with General French at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 (11 men killed & 31 wounded). Private Harper was one of those killed during the battle and was buried at the Elandslaagte battleridge cemetery.
