Leon was the son of Philip H. Winfield and Lura Lee Dewoody. His parents were divorced in Decatur, Alabama in 1889 on the grounds of Mental and physical cruelty. Leon and his infant brother were awarded to Lura their mother, but the father kidnapped the boys and took them to Memphis, Tennessee. Lura never saw her sons after they were taken, and Leon mentioned to me, he doesn't remember his mother. His mother Lura Lee Dewoody was my paternal great-grandmother, she was married four times. Her first husband died leaving her a childless widow at the age of 15. Her second husband, Arthur Marcus Simpson died leaving her with two children, one of whom is my Paternal Grandfather, her third husband was Philip H. Winfield, whom Lura had two sons. She then married Charles Kelly Thomas and they were the parents of three children.
