She was born on November 17, 1935 in Simla, Colorado to Alfred and Aletha (Kane) Bales. Marilyn graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1953. On April 23, 1956, Marilyn was united in marriage to Harlan Koch in Colorado Springs, CO. Harlan and Marilyn made their home in Austin, MN, where she raised the couple's three children, Brenda, Doug, and Denise. In addition, Marilyn also worked at Fantles Department Store and a local hallmark store once her children were older. She enjoyed playing cards and board games, reading- especially romance novels, dancing, and watching old movies. Marilyn was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Harlan; parents, Alfred and Aletha; and siblings, Merle, Marvin, Alvin, and Rogene.
