Maria (Lorant) Locke, 92, a resident of Wayland for 63 years, died Monday, March 5, 2018, at her daughter's home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, as the result of a gradual decline in health following a fall and subsequent amputation in November of 2015. She was the wife of Horatio Locke. Maria was born in Trieste, Italy in 1925 to Viennese parents. Her grandfather founded the third largest department store in Italy where her father also worked, her mother was a medical doctor. Her family left Trieste for Paris, when Mussolini came to power in Italy. Maria attended boarding school in Paris and remained in France throughout the Second World War.
Maria had been privately tutored and was fluent in German, Italian and French before she left Europe for the United States where her impeccable mastery of English followed.
Maria loved to entertain and cooked European as well as traditional Yankee and British cuisines. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters for many years and developed a number of treasured lifelong friendships there. She was also involved with Campion Center in Weston for many years. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Wayland. She was also an avid reader and involved in several Book Clubs.
She leaves behind her daughter Ednah Locke Walser of East Fallowfield, Pennsylvania; her grandson John Peter Crysdale of Toronto, Canada; her granddaughter Sarah Walser of State College, Pennsylvania where she attends Medical School; two great grandchildren; a nephew and a niece.
A short Graveside Episcopal Ceremony will be held by the Rev. Canon William Clay Parnell Canon to the Ordinary on Saturday, July 21st at 10:30 am at North Cemetery in Wayland.
