Sharlene Matlick Gordon, 82, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 29, 2021, at Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital.

Sharlene was born September 5, 1938, to William Walter and Harriet Hamilton Matlick in Preston County, West Virginia. She graduated from Fellowsville High School in 1955, and then earned her nursing degree in 1961 from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Sharlene worked as a registered nurse until her retirement as Director of Nursing at Westminster-Canterbury on the Chesapeake Bay Retirement Community.

Sharlene was married to the late Harold William Gordon, Jr., for 47 years until his death in 2012. They will be interred together at the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. Sharlene is survived by her children: Jan Healy and Craig and Heather Gordon, all of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Her former daughter-in-law Denise Gordon was like a daughter to her. Her grandchildren called her "Mimi": Allison Wilson of Shelbyville, Kentucky; Dalton Healy of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Hunter Gordon of Richmond, Virginia; Morgan Gordon of Richmond, Virginia; and Joshua, Ian, and Colby Gordon of Virginia Beach. She also has two great-grandchildren: Rowan and Madelyn Wilson, both of Shelbyville, Kentucky. Sharlene is survived by her brothers Gareth (Jo) Matlick and Kirby Matlick and her sister Ramona Scarton. Her brother BK Matlick preceded her in death in 2019. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Mariann Matlick, Marsha (Bill) Hinkle, Karen Lewis, and Brenda Christopher. Additionally, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember her fondly. She regarded her close friends as family.

During her retirement years, Sharlene earned her Master Gardener certificate and enjoyed working in the garden at the Francis Land house. She also spent many hours cultivating the gardens at her home. She also spent her time sewing, quilting, baking, and cooking. She enjoyed keeping up with the family and friends.
