Son of George Worth and Sarah Elliott Norman. Fred married (1) Mildred Lee Gordon, and (2) Shirley Jean Carter.

MULLINS - Fred Norman, 87, of Mullins passed away peacefully on July 8, 2021 at the Medical University of South Carolina Health Marion Medical Center after a period of declining health. A son of the late Worth Norman, Sr. and the late Sarah Elliott Norman, Fred was born in Marion County on May 23, 1934.

Best known for his long career in the restaurant industry, Fred opened the Mullins Grill on Main Street in 1960. He remained at that location until December 6, 1976 when he began operations at the current location of Fred's on Highway 76 in Mullins. Known far and wide for his delicious food, Fred Norman operated his trademark restaurant until his well-deserved retirement on May 23, 1999. After leaving Fred's, he never lost his love for the wonderful people in the community.

He thoroughly enjoyed being around others and was genuine in his interaction with those he encountered both at the restaurant and during the time he worked at Ace Hardware. Fred was the same every time you saw him as his attitude never changed.

In earlier years, Fred enjoyed offshore fishing and could even be found freshwater fishing on the Little Pee Dee River when time allowed. He took pride in caring for his yard and was awarded Yard of the Month on more than one occasion. After his retirement, he and his late wife, Jean traveled extensively to many of the Western States.

In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Sarah Lynn Norman; two brothers, Worth Norman, Jr. and Joe Chester Norman; and a sister, Margaret Lovette.

He is survived by four daughters, Robee Atkinson (Kenny) of Mullins, Lisa Hamilton (Rickie) of Tabor City, NC, Patsy Brown (Donnie) of Mullins and Sheila Spencer of Mullins; two sons, Wayne Gleason (Jan) of Nebraska and Billy Gleason (Lori) of Mullins; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will lay Fred to rest at Red Hill Cemetery.
