The Wisconsin Military Index Card for the U.S. Civil War on file in the U.S. National Archives in Microfilm 559, Number 30 shows Edward Thurtell was a Private in the 25th Wisconsin Infantry. He is therefore undoubtedly the E. Thurtell listed in the Roll of Honor Volume XXVI, Names of Soldiers Who Died in Defense of the Union Interred in the National Cemeteries, which was published in Washington, DC, originally in 1871. This record shows E. Thurtell, a Private in the 25th Wisconsin Infantry, died August 27, 1863, and is buried at Mound City National Cemetery, Illinois, in Section E, Grave 4419, and that his original place of burial had been in Paducah, Kentucky. Information from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum shows that Edward Thurtell was a Private in Company I of the 25th Wisconsin Infantry. His residence is shown as Hazel Green. He enlisted August 15,1862, and died August 27, 1863, in Paducah, Kentucky, from disease
