On June 20, 2021, Bernadine "Bernie" Meadows played the final chords of her life valiantly, as she lived her 92 years.
Bernie passed away at home, in her beloved Las Vegas.
Bernie's great loves were the people of Las Vegas, her partner, Gail, her children, music, wild birds and tame dogs.
Bernie was born in Las Vegas, NM on April 9, 1929, to Ephraim and Cecile Welch.
One of her favorite childhood memories was the time she lived in a boxcar just outside of Lamy, NM.
Early on, she developed a lifelong love of music. In high school, she wrote a march and won a music scholarship to Highlands University, where she began studies at the age of 16. Ultimately, she set aside her ambition for a music career when she married in 1947. Bernie settled with her growing family in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and spent her next 37 years raising ten children. Once her youngest was in school, she began running the cafeteria at St. John's Elementary, transforming the school lunch fare from prepackaged items to homemade bread and foods prepared from scratch.
In her forties she returned to school to become an operating room technician and worked at Jane Phillips Memorial Hospital. When her husband, Hap retired in 1984, they moved back to Las Vegas. Bernie worked for the Las Vegas Hospital and immediately started a folk-dancing group at the Arts Council.
Bernie was much appreciated and loved by the Las Vegas community. Bernie sang in several choirs, directed the bell choir at the Presbyterian church, played the baritone horn in bands, played on a basketball team that went to the Senior Olympic Games, started a weekly game night that continued for years, and continued to practice her piano daily. Bernie welcomed visits from old and new friends, her sister and her many children and their families, making them delicious meals and perfect margaritas, then beating them at ping-pong.
Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Vernon, her husband, Lionel (Hap) Meadows and her sons, Paul (Sandy) and Bernard (Bernie).
Bernie is survived by her life partner Gail Malley, her sister, Barbara, her children, Cate (Bill), Michael (Jean), Martin (Donna), Philip (Liz), Maggie (Peter), Mary, Christine and Pete (Penny) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Bernie will be held at First United Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas on July 24, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Samaritan House in Las Vegas, NM.
