Kathleen A. "Kate" Dowd, 78, of K.C., MO passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021, at the K.U. Medical Center in K.C., KS. Kate was born July 7, 1942, in Sabetha, KS to Edward Martin and Mary Margaret (Mohan) Boeding. Kate was a native of Seneca, KS; later becoming a graduate of Mt. St. Scholastic in Atchison, KS; where she met her future husband Walt Dowd, a student at St. Benedict's College. Shortly after Kate's graduation, on November 26, 1964, they married in Seneca. After earning her B.A. in Sociology and Secondary Education at Mt. St. Scholastic, Kate earned her Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas in 1977. She worked for the Division of Family Services in Platte County, MO and in addition to raising their own 2 daughters, Kate and Walt became foster parents for 3 teenagers. Kate worked as a Social Service Supervisor, was Staff Development Specialist for Platte and Jackson Counties, was Social Service Supervisor in Platte Clinton, and Daviess Counties, and served as a Child Welfare Worker for the Missouri Division of Welfare in Platte County. As a licensed Clinical Social Worker for the state of Missouri, Kate was Chief Juvenile Officer for Sixth Judicial Circuit of Platte County, and worked for Kansas Social and Rehabilitative Services, as well as held her own private practice as a Clinical Social Worker. Her numerous memberships included: National Association of Social Workers, Platte County Children's Trust Board of Director Treasurer, Missouri Alliance for Children, Youth and Families Steering Committee, Northland Symphony Orchestra, Inc. board member and funding committee chair, Platte County Eleemosynary Society member, Missouri Association of Social Welfare member, and member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Weston, MO, where she served as Weston Lector and Eucharistic Minister. In 1974, Kate's leading volunteer role was as president of Northland Youth-Adult Projects, Inc. a non-profit group which sponsors Synergy House, a short-term crisis intervention center which works with young people and families, located in the northern part of Park College in Parkville, MO. As a result of her numerous community involvements, Kate was awarded the Outstanding Young Women's award by the Southern Platte County Jaycee Wives, in recognition of her volunteer work. Kate was currently a member of the 12 Apostles Catholic Church in Platte City, enjoyed sewing and making dolls for her family's children, painting, and crafting. She also loved to travel and play golf. Kate was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walt; a brother Al (Lola) Boeding; and a sister Alice (Jim) Rice. She is survived by her daughters, her granddaughter , her brothers , 3 foster children; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Following cremation, a visitation will be held 10:00 am – 12 noon, Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston. Inurnment will follow on Labor Day at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Seneca, KS.
