Lived in Makanda, Il at time of joining 13 IL US Cav Con in Carbondale, Il. He was mustered in on Feb. 12, 1864 at Camp Butler, IL. Up to this time, he had been a farmer in South Carolina and Illinois.

While serving in the military, Simpson contacted a fatal disease and died in the U.S. Military Hospital in Mound City, IL. He left a wife and 3 daughters.
