Woodrow Wilson Austin

Woodrow Wilson Austin, 92, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Kilmichael Hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at Kilmichael Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with interment following at Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Kilmichael Baptist Church from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and one hour prior to funeral service on Wednesday.

Mr. Austin was born in Poplar Creek, Montgomery County, Miss. He was the youngest of eight children born to Will and Margaret (Maggie) Ellis Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Mae Austin Oswalt, Ben Austin, Lula Austin Jefcoat, Hattie Austin McMinn, William (Bill) Austin, Pearl Austin Cutt and Grady Austin.
He married Frances Miles on Nov. 25, 1937, and they reared nine children, seven daughters and two sons. His wife, Frances, preceded him in death on Feb. 13, 2002, as did his eldest son, W.M. (Bill) Austin who died May 30, 2007.

He is survived by one son, Andy Austin (Connie) of Kilmichael and seven daughters: Paula Austin Clark (Bo), Atlanta, Ga; Glynda Austin, Madison; Melba Austin Darton (Brad Tamrack), Travelers Rest, S.C; Judy Austin Spurgeon, Greenwood; Janet Austin Bryant (Daniel), Starkville; Deborah Austin Balle, Kilmichael, and Kasey Austin Henly, Deltona Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Austin farmed in his early life on the farm where he was born and later worked at Windon Manufacturing until his retirement due to disability in 1969. In his retirement years, he acquired many hobbies including gardening, both flowers and vegetables, wood working and beekeeping. He loved to meet new people and visit with his many acquaintances. He could always make a connection with anyone he met. He loved history, particularly family history, and he loved to read and to travel. He was able to visit the original Austin homestead, Gilder Plantation in Greenville County, S.C., where his ancestors began their life in this country.

Through the generosity of his children, he and his wife were privileged to travel to many of these United States from California to Virginia, visit our nation's capitol, the Smokey Mountains, the Ozarks, the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tenn., New Orleans, La. ride a riverboat, fly in an airplane as just a few examples. Without exception, every place he traveled and visited, he was able to make at least one connection with someone he met.

Pallbearers are Chris Chandler, Jeremy Henley, Jason Henly, Matthew Austin, Jessica Balle, Desirae Austin and Michael Austin. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Pickenpaugh, Brad Tamrack and Daniel Bryant.
