Paul Ellis Carlton returned home to rest in God's everlasting arms on October 18, 2020.

Paul was born to Nellie West Carlton and Ellis Estile Carlton on August 8, 1924 in Mt. Zion, North Carolina.

He attended school at Cool Springs Little Red School House until the seventh grade. He then started helping his father farm and work in construction.

On April 14, 1944 Paul joined the Navy. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Elizabeth Cook on July 29, 1944. While in the Navy, he was a Seaman First Class V6 USNR (SV). Paul received the American medal and the Victory - World War II medal. He left with an honorable discharge March 5th, 1946.

Paul continued working with his father in the construction and the woodworking business. They built cabinets, looms, a roll top desk, dressers, houses and anything you wanted. They built his and Carolyn's house where they would raise their five children.

Paul along with his father, Estile, was a water dowser. During their lives they helped many people in the community find the perfect location to drill their wells.

Around 1956, Paul started another career as a superintendent building Post Offices for L.B. Gallimore in Greensboro. He traveled to many different states. He worked on the Boone Post Office sometime in the 1960's. Paul worked for Gallimore until the late 1960's, when he returned home. He continued working construction. He was a perfectionist, which could be seen in his work.

Paul was a collector; you name it and he collected it. His favorite past time was looking for treasures and he found many. He loved playing carrom, putting puzzles together and working on clocks. He built a large frame to hold the clocks.

He also went to sign language class numerous times. He was so cute signing with everyone else. He had the "I love you" sign, perfect.

He was a three-time cancer survivor. He attended Relay For Life at least sixteen times with his family cheering him on. It was always on Father's Day weekend so that was something to celebrate.

Paul, above all else, had a heart of gold, loved his family and spending time with them and their grand-dogs. When the family got together it was something to see. Paul accepted anyone our family brought in and never met a stranger. He could not hear very well; of course, he said he heard what he wanted to. I am sure it was like watching a movie, an almost silent movie where he might try to read lips.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Nellie West Carlton and Estile, his loving wife Carolyn Cook Carlton; of almost fifty-six years, his sisters, Ruth Carlton South and Lucy Carlton Bentley, his son-in-law Thomas Barber.

He is survived by his younger sister, Arlene Carlton Welch.

He is also survived by his five children, Karen Coffey and husband Jim, Brenda Barber and partner Marcus Royal, Colleen Lisk and husband Craig, Toni Carlton and Mark Skenes and Paul's son, Eddie Paul Carlton.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Anthony Coffey, Bradley Bettini and Sharon Bettini, Tish and Jim Robertson, Henry Thomas Barber II, Edie Royal, Melody Skenes and Louis Montel, Josh and Amanda Skenes and Chele and Bobby Bradley.

His great-grandchildren that survive him are, Desiree Bettini, Anna Bigelow and Jacob Williams, Katie and James Robertson, Camille Ward, Tori Bettini, Zachary Bettini and Jake Ward, also many beloved nieces and nephews.

Great-great-grandchildren are Grace Bigelow, Bearik Bigelow, Maverick Bigelow and James Ring.

An incredibly special thank you to all the employees at the Foley Center at Chestnut Ridge in Blowing Rock, especially Amy Townsend and Gretchen Bauman. It has been Paul's home since January 12, 2019. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at Watauga Medical Center for the special care of our father.

He was loved fiercely and will be missed just as much.

Paul would be pleased if donations were made in his memory to the Watauga Humane Society, P. O. Box 1835 Boone, NC 28607 or the American Legion Post #130, 135 Bear Trail Boone, NC 28607.

There will be a private Celebration of Life held by the family.
