She was born September 21, 1922, in the Stony Fork community, to Estil Ellis and Nellie West Carlton.
Mrs. South was a homemaker and a weaver, having taught weaving at the former Watauga Handcrafted Sop in Boone and Camp Yonahlossee in Blowing Rock. She was well known for her expertise in the art of weaving. She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, one son, one grandson, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and one step-great-grandson, two sisters, one brother and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Monday morning at 11 a.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Reverend Delmar James. Burial followed in the Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
