Charlotte Potter's background is not known, however several censuses suggest forebearers were from New Jersey. Charlotte was born 6th of 11 children.

She married James Francis and they had 6 children, living on their farm in Colden, Erie County, New York. James was in the War of 1812, died in 1851, Charlotte maintained their farm with the help of sons. Charlotte's sons and daughters took care of her the final part of her life.
