Sarah Maria McNeal, first child of Abraham McNeal and Phoebe Beebe, born 11 March 1851 in Wisconsin. Along with her parents and younger sister Delia, the family moved to just west of what is now Fremont, Nebraska. Along with them came he mother of Phoebe, Samuel and Wealtha Beebe and their children. In 1856 two sisters were born, Jennie and Anna, the first white children born in Dodge county, Nebraska. On Aug 8, 1858, the youngset McNeal child, Charles henry was born. The mother, Phoebe, and the younger children had been weakened by boughts of malaria, and shorlty after birthing the child, passed away. On Aug 23, 1858 Charles Henry also passed away.
By 1860 the family, torn by their loss, pressed on to Sacramento, California with the Fisher wagon train. Abraham had been told that his brother, John had been living. Shortly after their arrival, the moved on to the Willamette valley in Salem, Oregon.
The father found work in Salem, but soon there was a terrible flood in Salem. Wiped out financially, he was forced to adopt out the children. At one point Abraham had become seriously ill with lung fever. The two oldest children, Sarah and Delia moved back with their father. The two girls attended The Academy for the sacred Heart for 1-1/2 years, then the high school for one year and then the Willamette university for another year, while the father settled the bills.
In 1883 she married George Franklin Orchard. Children listed in the 1900 census are Pearl, Ruby and Emily. In the 1920 Census two other children are listed, Marguerite and Delores.In the 1930 Census Sarah is listed living with her daughter, Emily G walker. Date of death shows 21 June, 1940 in King County, age 88.
