Dier Jr., Blanche Joe "B.J."

Blanche Joe "B.J." Dier Jr., 80, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., passed peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family and the beautiful oaks on Mack Bayou Road. He had endured Alzheimer's disease for several years. A memorial service and visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at Bluewater Baptist Church in Niceville, Fla., followed by a military honors service at Gulf Cemetery at 4 p.m. in Santa Rosa Beach. B.J. is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia; five children, Mary D. Hauth of Niceville, Rebecca D. Hart of Santa Rosa Beach, Joe B. Dier and his wife, Kim, of Starkville, Miss., William G. Dier and his wife, Tracey, of Melbourne, Fla., and Andrew M. Dier of Bogota, Colombia. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Patricia Hauth, Carrie, Patrick, Reed and Kevin Dier. He is also survived by six of his eight siblings, Bonnelle Devall, Jesse Dier and Winston Dier, both of Baton Rouge, Peter Dier of Freeport, Fla., Ann Wilson of Shreveport, and Jack Dier of Dickson, Tenn. B.J. was born on Nov. 13, 1924, in Baton Rouge. He was a 1944 graduate of LSU, a 1949 graduate of New Orleans Baptist Seminary and earned a master's degree from Troy State University in 1979. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953, serving as a chaplain at military installations in Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Florida, Okinawa, Mississippi and Alaska. A World War II veteran, he retired at Hurlburt Field, Fla., with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1976. A 1941 graduate of Central High School, his first ministry opportunity was at the Mission Church at Harding Field established by First Baptist Church. The Mission Church later became Brownfields Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or Bluewater Baptist Church of Niceville.
