Alfred Gene Snyder, 67, of Freeburg, died at 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 15, 1996, at Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport, where he was admitted the day prior.

Born August 4, 1928 at Richfield, he was the son of the late Raymond C. and Marie N. Graybill Snyder.

September 20, 1947 he married the former Lucille M. Gundrum, who survives.

Mr. Snyder graduated in 1946 from Selinsgrove High School, then entered into military service with the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1946-1948. Following his duties with the Marines, he enrolled at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, and graduated with a B.S. in business in 1952. He again enlisted in the military, with the U.S. Navy, and served during the Vietnam era, earning the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with one Bronze Star, the Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V", Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and the National Defense Service Medal. He retired as a Naval commander in 1988, ending his military duties with the Naval Reserves, honorably discharged.

He received his M.S. degree from Bloomsburg University in 1978, with his focus of study in special education, Following a 20-year employment at the Laurelton Center, Laurelton, where he was a special education teacher supervisor, Mr. Snyder retired in 1990.

He was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Freeburg. Additional memberships include the Theta Chai Fraternity, the Naval Reserve Association, the Reserve Officers Association and the Retired Officers Association, all of Washington, DC, the American Association of Retired Persons and Dauntless Hook and Ladder Fire Company Ambulance League, Selinsgrove.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Alfred Gene Snyder II of Richfield and Gregg A. Snyder, Bisbee, AZ; three brothers, Warren R. Snyder, California, MD, Horace E. "Pit" Snyder, Freeburg, and Dale R. Snyder, Irving, TX; two sisters, Luella N. Kaufman, Baltimore, MD, and Eleanor J. Snyder, Richfield RR 1; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Sunday from the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. David K. Loader officiating and Rev. Arthur D. Steckel assisting. Interment was to be held privately.
