Indian Ward Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on November 19, 1870 for his actions as a private in Company M, 6th US Cavalry, US Army on October 5, 1870, at the Wichita River in Texas during the Texas-Indian Wars. He emigrated from Canada around 1870 and enlisted in the US Army under the name of James Anderson and was assigned to frontier duty in northwest Texas. On October 5, 1870, he and other members of his unit participated in a running battle with hostile Plains Indians at the Wichita River for which he and five others were awarded the Medal of Honor. He remained in the US Army and eventually rose to the rank of 2nd lieutenant. He died at the age of 69. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry during the pursuit and fight with Indians."
