5639 Corporal A Lodge, 2nd Battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from India on 16 Sep 1899 and arriving in Natal on 30 Sep 1899. Its first engagement was on 24 Oct 1899 at Rietfontein. They formed part of the garrison of Ladysmith during the siege. In the great attack of 6 Jan 1900 four companies of the battalion were sent in the early morning as reinforcements to Waggon Hill, where they took part in the furious fighting (11 killed and about 35 wounded). After the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, the battalion were part of the advance north to the Transvaal-Natal border, and in July was ordered to sail for Colombo with prisoners. Corporal Lodge fell ill as the advance north got underway and died of pneumonia in the military hospital, Ladysmith, Natal.
