3994 Private A Lea (not Leaf as on the cemetery memorial), 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars. A detachment of 110 all ranks from the 11th Hussars were sent to South Africa in 1899 (the remainder of the Regiment had been despatched to join them but they were kept in Egypt where they had stopped off en route). Private Lea was attached to the 5th Lancers who were in Ladysmith when the Second Anglo Boer War began. The 5th Lancers were not involved in the battle of Talana Hill, but fought at Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 and at Lombard's Kop or Ladysmith on 30 Oct 1899. They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege and carried out a bold reconnaissance with the 18th Hussars on 8th Dec 1899 near Surprise Hill. Private Lea was one of those killed in the action.

Date of death recorded as 8 Dec 1899 on the QSA medal rolls and on In Memoriam by S Watt. Recorded as 19 Dec 1899 on the Natal Field Force Casualty Roll (page 8 line 4).
