Canon. Miguel de Palomares was the pillar of evangelization in New Spain. He was a member of the first ecclesiastical council between 1536 and 1542. He arrived in the conquered territories in 1530 and began officiating masses in the parish of Veracruz and two years later he moved to the capital to join the aforementioned council. Apart from helping the bishop, he served as confessor to Archbishop Zumárraga and even held the position of general secretary within the council. At his death, 16 masses were celebrated for his soul and his remains were placed in the "decaying chamber". Years later the canon's remains were taken to the nave of the Greater Church for his formal burial where they remained until their discovery in 2017, when they were transferred to the Metropolitan Cathedral of the city.
