Mary was past commander of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 365, Collinsville, Illinois, and served for years with the American Legion Auxiliary Juniors. She was an active church member at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Collinsville and also served in the Ladies Aid and LWML. She was a founding volunteer at the Anderson Hospital and assisted in setting up the gift shop. After her husband's death she moved to Washington state and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Seatac, Washington. She was an 11-year resident of Judson Park Retirement Community.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Vanclede George Allen, whom she married October 28, 1941; her parents Otto and Emma (nee Hacker) Schmidt; a sister, Elnora Moore; and a brother, Elmer Schmidt.
Surviving are two daughters, Carolee (Steve) Grumm of Shoreline, Washington and Mary Jo (Joe) Marsh of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Matthew Grumm of Portland, Oregon; Allen (Lori) Marsh of Springfield, Missouri; Patrick (Jody) Marsh of Eagan, Minnesota; and Amy (Eric) Schutte of Woodbury, Minnesota; and three great-grandchildren, Lily Marsh, Tyler Schutte, and Jack Marsh.
