Christopher, the son of David A. and Mary Brown, worked as a harness maker. He married Delia Ann Lipscomb in Richmond on 16 May 1844. They had at least five children: William, Cornelia E., Charles G., David A. and James L. He was remarried to Delia Ann's sister Maria P. Lipscomb on 26 December 1861.

He enlisted as a Private in Parker's Battery, Virginia Light Artillery on 14 March 1862, and was immediately detailed to the Quartermaster's Department. He rejoined the unit in January 1864, but was hospitalized in October 1864, and later found to be AWOL.

He died age 74 at 104 E. Broad Street of "Chronic Inflammation of the Stomach and Bowels," per Cemetery records. His grave in his mother-in-law Sarah P. Lipscomb's plot is unmarked.
