Catherine was the daughter of David and Abigail (Chafee) Foster. She married Alvah Culver in about 1833 and together with her husband and two small children became one of the early pioneers of southwestern Wisconsin; she would later recall that she could go six months without seeing another white person. Alvah and Catherine had ten children and became the progenitors of the Culver family in southern Wisconsin.
