2395 Private A Farquhar, 1st Battalion the (King's) Liverpool Regiment. The Battalion was in Ladysmith when war was declared and was there throughout the seige. During the siege of Ladysmith the Liverpools were located on the north side of the town, and were not in the terrible fighting when the attack was made upon the southern defences on 6 Jan 1900. The battalion and other troops were emaciated after the seige and were given time to recuperate. Private Farquhar fell ill during this period and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at No 1 Stationary Hospital, Modder Spruit, Natal (about 10km NE of Ladysmith). He was buried at Modder Spruit. His remains were later reinterred at Elandslaagte (5km NE of Modder Spruit). He is also commemorated on the (King's) Liverpool Regiment Boer War memorial in St John's Gardens, behind St Georges Hall, William Brown Street, City Centre, Liverpool, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/121227).
