GULFPORT -Joan Barrett Roosa, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, in Gulfport. She was born May 23, 1934, in Booneville to Dr. and Mrs. J.T. Barrett. She was married to Col. Stuart A. Roosa, an Apollo 14 astronaut. She witnessed his 1971 mission to the moon and traveled with him to the White House and to Camp David as a guest of President Nixon. She was a graduate of Tupelo High School. She attended the University of Mississippi and graduated from Mississippi University for Women with a degree in history. An adventurer and world traveler, she traveled to more than 60 countries. She was a accomplished epicurean and studied cooking all over the world.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosemary D. Roosa of Biloxi; Christopher A. Roosa of Arlington, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. John D. Roosa of Tucson, Ariz.; Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Allen Roosa Jr. of Winter Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Knox White of Gulfport; her longtime caregiver, Ann Powell.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, John T. Barrett Jr. and a sister, Mrs. Jack Reese.
