STARKVILLE - Gloria Barrett Reese, 78, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at the Oktibbeha County Hospital. She was born in Booneville, grew up in Tupelo and lived in the Sessums community near Starkville since 1955. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a former dairy farmer. She studied art at Mississippi University for Women and won awards at juried shows. She and her husband lived briefly in Jackson, where she was an architectural illustrator and house plan designer for Historical Replications, her daughter's business. After her husband's retirement, they began Reese Orchard in Sessums, where the specialty was unusual fine fruits. She exemplified an explorer's spirit, traveling extensively and continuing to research her many interests in horticulture, architecture, literature and art. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jack M. Reese, nine months ago.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Starkville. Burial will be in Oktibbeha County Memorial Gardens. Welch Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include seven children, Barrett Reese and his wife, Anita, of Coppell, Texas, Mike Reese and his wife, Cindy, of Columbus, Cecilia Reese Bullock of Jackson, Carol Reese of Jackson, Tenn., and Dan Reese and his wife, Mary Ann, Terry Reese McDowell and her husband, Ledge, and David Reese, all of Sessums; six granddaughters, Mary Celeste Reese, Dallas Sorrell, Mary Elizabeth Reese, Carole Anne Reese, Alexis Bullock and Lauren Reese; six grandsons, Barrett Reese Jr., Dan Alan Reese, Seth Bullock, Ledge McDowell, Silas McDowell and Matt McDowell; a great-grandson, Stone Reese; two sisters, Patti Barrett White and Joan Barrett Roosa of Gulfport.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the church.
