William E. Anthon was the son of Susan Grigsby Anthon and John Anthon; husband of Mary Fritter Anthon; father of Laura Anthon Spath Williams, Annettie Anthon Turner, Carrie Anthon Robertson and Viola Anthon; and brother of Mary, John W, Charles, Luther, Robert, George, and Mildred.

William was a farmer. During the Civil War, he was a member of the Fredericksburg Light Artillery. He enlisted on March 30, 1864 and mustered out on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.
