Lilly Jane was just 8 months old when her family set out on a wagon train headed for Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents, Martha and William Lambourne, Jr., and four siblings joined other Mormon pioneers who left St. Louis, Missouri, in July 1866 as part of the John D. Holladay Company.

The wagon train was passing through Wyoming when Lilly Jane died on August 25th. Her family reached Salt Lake City a month later.

The following is an excerpt from a poem written by her father:

"As I kissed away her parting breath
And thought of her dear name
I knew that she was blessed
Our dearest Lilly Jane

We buried her by the wayside
On Laramie's wild plain
And strewn her grave with flowers
Our darling Lilly Jane

And now if we prove faithful
And walk the narrow lane
In the resurrection morn
We shall have our Lilly Jane

So fare you well, dear Lilly
'Till we shall meet again
How great will be the joy
To have our Lilly Jane"

(*Note: Alternate sources have spelled her name "Lily Jane" and "Lillie Jane".)
