David Davis, a Negro, Nearly Decapitated by a Knife in the Hands of Some Unknown Person.
----
Last Saturday evening, August 4, at about 8:25, Ernest Eggleston reported to Officer O'Connor that a drunken man was lying on the railroad track between First and Front streets. He immediately repaired to the place, where upon examination the man was found to be a negro lying on his back with his throat cut from ear to ear; in fact his head was almost severed from his body. Officer O'Connor reported the murder and immediately a number of men repaired to the scene. It was soon learned that the murdered man's name was David Davis, and that he was employed in the Golden Gate restaurant, having gone off shift that day at 6 o'clock p. m. It seems that four negroes were together that evening, namely, George Owen, Matthew Collett, John Wells and David Davis, the murdered man. There was some little dispute among them about a small sum which Collett claimed Davis owed him. Owen and Wells left the others about eight o'clock, near the spot where the dead body of Davis was found twenty-five minutes later. Nothing more was seen of them until the dead body of Davis was found. This is the story which rumor credits Wells and Owen with telling. As the coroner and the sheriff saw fit to exclude everybody from the room except the officers, jurors and witnesses, during the inquest, including representatives of both newspapers, the Record is unable to vouch for anything except the fact that Davis, after he had been sat upon by the coroner, and probably before, was found to be quite dead, so dead indeed that it was found to be necessary to haul him off to the cemetery Monday and bury him at the expense of the county. It is further stated that the coroner's jury found that Davis came to his death at the hands of Matthew Collett, and he is held to await the result of a preliminary examination before Justice Woods next Monday, the 20th inst. The preliminary hearing will be reported in the Record next week.

INFORMATION ABOUT PAUPER'S FIELD IN THIS CEMETERY
Over 600 individuals are buried in this small section of the cemetery. There are some tombstones that have names on them. Photos have been taken of these by a few individuals & are posted. There are many metal cemetery markers, though nowhere near 600 of them. Most are NOT legible. The ones that are, photos have been taken of those & are posted. As for the rest, whatever photo may be posted IS Pauper's Field & it is posted because there is no way of knowing the EXACT location of these individuals within this area. PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THESE IMAGES. As these images are what is available for these individuals. Thank you.
