Bert Hedstrom Rites Monday
Funeral services for Bert E. Hedstrom, Deadwood, who died Friday morning, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Harold Shay will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Deadwood.
The body will like in state at the Wells Funeral Home until 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Hedstrom was born in Axtell, Neb. April 30 1888, the son of Carl and Charlotta Hedstrom. The family moved to Boulder, Colo., when he was 12 years old.
In 1908, he came to Deadwood where he was employed by the Goldberg Grocery, and later was manager of the grocery department of Fish & Hunter Co., until 1917.
He was manager of Paxton and Gallagher Wholesale Grocery for 30 years.
Hedstrom was commissioner for the first district of Lawrence County; had served on the board of education of the Deadwood public schools, and was a member of the Deadwood city council for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Black Hills Consistory, Naja Shrine, and member and past exalted ruler of Deadwood Lodge, B.P.O. Elks. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
His marriage to May Teeter, Central City, took place in Deadwood, Oct. 29, 1914.
He is survived by his wife, May, two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Betty May) Thornton, North Hollywood, Calif.; and Mrs. Dale (Jean) Kirchenbauer, Santa Paula, Calif.; three grandsons, Robert J., Bert and Kent Thornton, North Hollywood, one granddaughter, Julie Kirchenbauer, Santa Paula, Calif.; two brothers, Lix and Ed Hedstrom, Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by a son, Bert Jr. in 1934, his parents and nine sisters.
A memorial has been established for the Children's Home Society, Sioux FAlls. Gifts may be left with Mrs. J.A. Jarvi, or the Wells Funeral Home.
