961 Gunner A Christmas, J Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. The Battery arrived in the Cape Colony in Feb 1900. It operated with General Clements and accompanied him on the advance from the Modder River to Bloemfontein. It took part in the advance to Pretoria, with General Gordon's brigade in the centre—and in the eastern movement to Belfast. It was present at the ceremony of proclaiming the annexation on 25 Oct 1900. It was with Clements in the Megaliesberg in the latter part of Dec 1900, and under General French when he cleared that district after the disaster at Nooitgedacht. The battery formed part of General Alderson's column in French's sweep through the Eastern Transvaal Jan to Mar 1901. It was afterwards with Colonel Bullock's column, and when General Spens took over the column, the battery remained and operated in Jul-Aug 1901 in the Orange River Colony. Gunner Christmas died of disease at 15 Stationary Hospital, Heidelberg, Transvaal. He is also commemorated on the Royal Artillery Boer War memorial on the corner of Horse Guards Parade and the Mall, at the north-east corner of St James Park, London, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/112037).
