He was a son of Henry Brown and Temperance Wakefield Brown.
He married Charlotte J. "Lettie" Green 10-16-1840 in Haywood Co., NC. His wife never remarried.

Letter from Sgt SW Carter - I certify the within named Moses Brown a private of Capt. John Peek's Co B 16th Rgt NC Troops born in Buncombe county in the state of NC age 35 years. Five feet 10 inches high. Dark complexion. Black eyes. Black hair., farmer, was enlisted by LM Allen at Marshall on July 8, 1861 to serve 12 mos. and said Moses Brown died at Manassas hospital VA on Dec 10, 1861 of typhoid fever and there is pay due him from July 8th 1861 to Dec 10, 1861 and said deceased has received of confederate states in clothing $3.80. Given in duplicate at camps near Wolf Shoals 2-27-1862. Lt Carter, commanding Co. B

We the under assigned holders plea --- James M. Pain J.P., Nathaniel Davis, B.R. Dogget have met according to order of court on the 21 day of January 1862 and has proceeded to lay off or allot to the L.J. Brown, widow of Moses Brown dec. the following (viz) all the corn on land, four head of cattle, 6 head of fat hogg, 6 head of stock, 6 head of sheep and Moses Brown served in the Southern Confederacy five dollars on William Waldroup and the crop of growing wheat and all the house hold and kitchen furniture and all the farming tracts on hand--
