Emeline Jane Boan was the wife of Robert Franklin Hancock. She was the daughter of Daniel Boan and his first wife, Sarah "Sallie" Gulledge. Daniel had only two children with Sallie Gulledge - Emeline and her sister, Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Boan who married Moses Coker. After Sallie's death, Daniel married, in his old age, to Susannah "Susie" Horne and had three more children.

Emeline was an educated woman, unusual for a country girl in those times. She attended the academy at Mt. Croghan, and is said to have been a genius with mathmetics and numbers.

Emeline's mother, Sallie (Gulledge) Boan was born about 1812 in Anson County, NC and died after the 1870 census. Sallie's parents have not been proven, but Marie Gulledge Wiggins strongly believed, based upon myriad clues that she dug up over the years, that Sallie was the daughter of a young, unmarried Gulledge woman who later married a Mr Johns; that Sallie's mother was almost certainly a daughter of William Hood Gulledge and sister of William Hubbard Gulledge; and that Sallie's natural father was a young family member - probably a young Jeremiah Gulledge - who went west to Alabama with other family members to escape the scandal (or the shotgun).

Sallie and Daniel were said by older family members to have been buried in the Boan family cemetery in a field on the Daniel Boan farm just off Hwy #9 between Mt. Croghan and Ruby. Marie was also told by some of the older family members that some of the Johns family were buried in the same cemetery, and that they were relatives of Sallie.

Daniel's daughter by his second wife Susannah "Susie" Horne, told her children that Susie buried Daniel Boan beside his first wife in the Boan family cemetery on Daniel's farm - and that cemetery has been plowed over. Marie and Bruce and others spent much time searching for the cemetery, but finally determined it had been plowed over.

The CSA marker for Daniel at Elizabeth Church is a cenotaph, not Daniel's grave marker. Walter Gulledge, Emeline's grandson, remembered when Emeline and Betsy placed the CSA monument for their father at the church about 1912.

Family information is based on the research of Marie Gulledge Wiggins, and posted to Findagrave in June 2017 by Marie's daughter, Jo Church Dickerson. I am the second great grandddaughter of Emeline (Boan) Hancock and the third great grandddaughter of Daniel and Sarah (Gulledge) Boan. Daniel and Susie's grandson, James Bruce Boan (1884-1990), was one of Marie's major sources of information about the Boan family, especially regarding the home site and cemeteries. Another important source for the cemeteries and home sites was "Teen" Oliver, a distant cousin of Jody Hancock; she was a great granddaughter of Jody's father whose name she couldn't remember, but told Marie her great-grandmother's name was Jane, and she believed Jane's maiden name was Jordan.
