"OBITUARY - SHACKELFORD. - Word came to this place the latter part of last week that Erastus Shackelford had died on the 15th inst., at his home near Plover, in Pocahontas Co., Iowa, and that the remains would be brought here for burial. Mr. Shackelford was born in Brown Co., Ohio, March 6, 1815. He was married to Mary Stuart Sept. 1st, 1836, in Clearmont Co., Ohio. There were eight children born to them, all living, four sons and four daughters, viz: John H., James B., Charles C. and Erastus A., Anna E. Lee, of Tuskahoma, Ind. Ter., Martha E. Huffman, of Bondurant, Sarah J. Roberts, of Pocahontas Co. and Luna M., wife of J. E. Davis, formerly of this place. Mr. S. entered the service in July 1862, as a member of Co. F, 68th Indiana Vol. Infantry. He was with Buell most of the time, was captured at Munfordville, Ky., afterward exchanged, and still later was discharged on account of general disability. He was a loyal and true soldier, and would have remained in the service had his health permitted. His wife died April 12, 1885. They had lived a number of years near Bondurant. The funeral took place in the Christian church here on Saturday, 17th, the remains having arrived the night before. The casket was borne to the church by the members of Ewing Post, No. 305, it having been his request that his comrades of this Post should bury him. The music was furnished by the combined choirs of the Christian and C. P. churches. Rev. R. A. Ferguson conducted the service, assisted by Revs. Curtis and Doty. The Post then conveyed the remains to the cemetery and laid them beside his wife, using their beautiful ritual service. Mr. S. was a man of the highest integrity as a citizen. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him. The children have the sympathy of many in their bereavement." "CARD OF THANKS. - The children of the late Erastus Shackelford extend thanks to the people of Maxwell for the kindness shown them in receiving and burying the remains of their father. They wish to assure the people that this kindly remembrance of them shall not be forgotten."
