A. Scott Varner

Allan "Scott" Varner, 58, of Parkersburg passed away April 23, 2006, at his home.

He was born April 18, 1948, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Jack and Lucille Jeffers Varner.

He was a member of Grace Gospel Church. He was a 1966 graduate of Parkersburg High School. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18. He was employed by L.A. Pipeline Construction as a superintendent for 33 years.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 25 years, Valerie Van Marter Varner; one son, Allan "Scott" Varner Jr. and his wife, Wendy, of Belpre; one daughter, Michelle Leigh Newbanks and her husband, Jim, of Westernport, Md.; four grandchildren, Michael and Shawna Varner of Newark, Ohio, Matthew Glover of Belpre, and his "Best Buddy" Anthony Scott Varner of Parkersburg; one brother, Jeff Varner and his wife, Myra, of Huntington; and several very special brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, co-workers and the River Bunch, who were very caring and supportive throughout his illness.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Mike Allen officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens with full military rites provided by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday and until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the M.D. Anderson Medical Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.
