'Train-Truck Crash at Powderly Kill 2'
An outing to Pat Mayse Lake ended in tragedy for a Powderly family late Monday afternoon shortly before 6:00 p.m. when their pickup truck was struck broadside by a train in that north Lamar County community. Both parents of the family were killed and two sons injured, one critically.

Pronounced dead on arrival at L.P. McCuistion Hospital in Paris were the driver, James Wesley Daughtrey, 48, and his wife, Evelyn, 46. A younger son, Kenny, 17, was rushed to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. His condition was listed as poor at noon today. Less seriously hurt was another son, James Geron, 24, who remains in L.P. McCuistion. He reportedly suffered head and leg injuries.

Persons on the scene related the family was en route to meet relatives at Pat Mayse Lake. A pleasure boat was being towed behind the vehicle.

Frisco Engineer Bobby Norton from Fort Smith, ARK, and Conductor Foy Rhodes of Hugo, OK, told Department of Public Safety Patrolman James Wray they were traveling toward Paris about 35 miles per hour and spotted Daughtrey's east bound auto approaching. When he did not stop, they sounded a horn and applied all brakes. The men recalled Daughtrey looking southward, apparently unaware of the approaching locomotive. At impact, the truck was knocked a short distance and came to rest only inches beside the train. The boat was thrown from its trailer into the crossing. Officials said the train skidded some 150 yards before it could be halted.

Daughtrey's vehicle, struck at the driver's door, was described as a total loss. Only several broken air lines and shattered glass marked damage to the huge locomotive engine.

The two deaths brought the Lamar County traffic toll to eight since April 25th. Six fatalities have occurred in the Powderly community.

A lifetime resident of Powderly, James Wesley Daughtrey, 48, was a foreman at the DeKalk Agresearch hatchery north of Paris, was born July 6, 1921, son of Nester Clay Daughtrey and Theo Roberts.

Rook of Powderly, Elvis Daughtrey of Paris, Mrs. Harold King of Memphis, TN, Mrs. Jane Lynch of Midland and Mrs. Mervin Shepard of Kenly, NC.
