Jacqueline "Jackie" Poole Herlong May 2, 1932 ~ March 20, 2021 (age 88)
Jacqueline "Jackie" Poole Herlong, 88, devoted wife of 66 years to Joe B. Herlong Sr., passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2021.
Born in Gaffney, S.C., she was one of nine children born to the late Shufford and Gertrude McCraw Poole.
Jackie graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and began her teaching career in Charlotte, N.C. In June of 1955, she married Joe, the love of her life, whom she had known since high school. The couple then moved to Spartanburg, S.C. where she taught at Huston Elementary School.
The Herlongs were charter members of Fernwood Baptist Church in Spartanburg, where she was a member of the Alma Hudson Sunday School Class. Upon moving to Simpsonville, they became members of Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church and the XYZ Sunday School Class.
Jackie was the epitome of a true southern lady and was an amazing daughter, wife, mother, "Granna", and friend.
In addition to her loving husband, Joe, Jackie's legacy will continue on with her two wonderful children, Joe Herlong Jr. and his wife, Darby, of Lugoff, and Lynne Waldrop and her husband, Dale, of Simpsonville, S.C.; five adoring grandchildren, Salvatore J. Lombardi, Grace Waldrop, Connor Waldrop, Douglas Bliss and her husband, Adam, and Annie Kate Herlong; her sister, Mary Ann Poole Clary; brother, Jimmy S. Poole and his wife, Janice; and several loving nieces, nephews, and other family members.
She was preceded in death by six siblings, Robert Miles Poole, Dr. Edgar M. Poole Sr., Hazel Poole Goudelock, Delia Poole White, Charles E. Poole, and John T. Poole.
A memorial service to celebrate Jackie's life will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast Chapel. The services will be officiated by the Reverend Dan Dodds and the family will briefly speak to friends after the service. Masks are required in all Thomas McAfee Funeral Home locations and attendees are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidelines on social distancing.
