Dharles Alfred was one of ten children born to William Henry and Rose E. Tomlinson Backous:Charles Alfred 1880, Lottie M. 1883-1884, George Henry 1885, Samuel J. 1887, Walter G. 1889, Edna B. 1891, Harley Earl 1893, Floyd S. 1896, Jesse Wilber 1901 and Elmer Epith 1906- 1910.

"OBITUARY - Charles Alfred Backous - Charles Alfred Backous, son of William and Rose Backous, was born near Maxwell, Iowa, October 24, 1880 and grew to manhood there. He was united in marriage to Florence Stone, November 23, 1903, at Des Moines, Iowa and to this union three sons were born. The family lived in Iowa until 1928, when they moved to Wetonka, South Dakota and came to Trego, Wisconsin in 1944 and have lived there since. Mr. Backous had been in failing health for the past 9 years and passed away at the St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, Thursday, June 11th at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 17 days. One son Carl, father, mother, four brothers and one sister preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Florence, two sons, Marion of Fond-Du-Loe, Wisconsin, Benjamin of Duluth, Minn., also three brothers, Samuel J. of Maxwell, Iowa, Walter of Walla Walla, Washington and Jesse of Aberdeen, South Dakota and one sister Mrs. Pete Peterson of South Dakota, 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 15th at 2 p.m., from Dahl Funeral Home with Rev. Hans Olson officiating. Burial was in Spooner Cemetery. Casket bearers were Nick Dulinger, Goldie Yeagle, Fritz Larson, Victor Saulien, Wesley Kehoe and Joe Druse__. From WISCONSIN TIMES."
