Lottie was second of ten children of William Henry and Rose E. Tomlinson Backous: Charles Alfred, Lottie M., George Henry, Samuel J., Walter G., Edna B., Harley Earl, Floyd S., Jesse Wilber and Elmer Epith.

According to the family history, "A daughter of George and Ann Oxley Tomlinson. Ten adults in all. Rose... married William Backous. They had eight children: Samual, Jessie, Walter, Etna, Floyd, Lottie, Elmer and George. Lottie Backous, died some time before 1941."
