1765 Private A Ashford, 2nd Battalion the Dorsetshire Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Simla on 28 Nov 1899, arriving at the Cape about 17 Dec 1899, and were sent to Durban. Along with the 2nd Somerset Light Infantry and 2nd Middlesex they formed the 10th Brigade under Major General Talbot Coke as part of the Ladysmith relief force. They took part in the march to Springfield and in the operations about Venter's Spruit and Spion Kop. They were in the fighting between 13-27 Feb 1900. On the 21st the brigade crossed the Tugela and occupied the Colenso position with some severe fighting. About the time the advance north from Ladysmith began, Pte Ashford fell ill and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at either the Convent Hospital or No 7 General Hospital, Estcourt, Natal. He is also commemorated on the 2nd Battalion the Dorsetshire Regiment Boer War memorial in Sherborne Abbey, Half Moon Street, Sherborne, Dorset, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/72213/).
