Liberty day enlisted as a Private in the Independent Company of the Fourth Michigan Infantry on February 8, 1864, for 3 years service, at age 23. He was mustered into Federal service on March 3, 1864, and on detached service with Company F of the First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, Petersburg, Virginia. Liberty mustered out of service on June 9, 1865 at Satterlie's Hospital, in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
