Grandpa Fleet was a man considered 'quare.' He ran a small water mill on Jimson Creek and was a good mechanic. He had the neighborhood job making coffins. When someone died he had to stop his regular work and build a wooden box for a casket. Years before he died he built his own coffin. People though him 'quare,' but he was ahead of his time. He did not fight in the War between the States. His wife, Lozane, was a Woods, and I remember hearing stories that she was quite a gal." [from the 1970 Autobiography of Price Magee, grandson of Fleet Magee, copy in possession of Bevin Creel)
Fleet Magee was born in Washington Parish, La., and resided near the old homestead until his death, Oct. 3, 1883, aged 48 years. He leaves a widow and seven children to mourn their loss.
Obituary of Fleet Magee, in Russ Williams, "Abstracts of Obituaries from the Minutes of the Magee's Creek Baptist Association,"
